The Gold Rush

GOLd rush era in gulgong

In the late 1800s Gulgong was an important gold mining centre, in fact Gulgong was one of the richest gold areas in New South Wales. Official production of gold from the Gulgong area between 1870 and 1927 was 555,205 ounces. It is believed that the true production figures could be much more.

Several mines were worked in the area and today you can visit Red Hill where gold was first found, walk through the replica mine and look down the Poppet Head into the old mine shaft.
